PNG to JPG
Convert PNG images to JPG. PNG is built for screenshots, logos, and anything with flat colour or sharp edges; JPEG for photographs, and it is the one raster format every piece of software opens. JPG has no alpha channel, so transparency is flattened onto a solid background. JPG is lossy, trading some detail for a far smaller file. Keep the PNG if you still need the pristine original. Runs on your own Vistalyth Tools instance. Files never reach a third party.
Features
- Pick the background colour that transparency is flattened onto
- Batch conversion across a folder of PNG files
- Metadata and colour profile carried over wherever JPG can hold them
- Your PNG files are processed on your own server and never uploaded anywhere
What you can do
- Cut page weight by serving JPG instead of PNG
- Batch a folder of PNG files into JPG in one pass
- Satisfy an upload form or pipeline that takes JPG and rejects PNG
Self-hosted. Your files never leave your network.
Vistalyth Tools runs entirely on your own infrastructure. Files processed with PNG to JPG are never uploaded to third-party servers. Deploy a single Docker container and process files with full privacy, no watermarks, and no usage limits. Open source under AGPL-3.0.
Frequently asked questions
- Will converting PNG to JPG lose quality?
- The visible pixels survive intact; it is the transparency that does not. Composite against the background you will actually display on, or the edges will fringe.
- What happens to transparent areas?
- They are composited onto a background colour you choose, white by default. There is no way around it: JPG has nowhere to store an alpha channel.
- Can I go back to PNG afterwards?
- You can, and if JPG is lossless the round trip is clean. If JPG is lossy, converting back gives you a PNG wrapper around already-degraded pixels rather than the original.
